BALANCE AND BIRDIES KEY TO WINNING BIG STOGIE BARN BURNER
Chuck Wimer’s team capitalized on balance scoring and a handful of birdies from Glenn Beekley as they held off Hank “once again the bridesmaid” Grahn’s team at this year’s Big Stogie. Steve Dorsheimer, of the now famous Sheimer-Wimer connection, added to his shirt collection with an incredible Closest to Pin shot on #8, leaving it just 4 feet to the right of a difficult pin placement. Rookie Nick Cordaro rounded out a balanced attack that shot individual scores of 84-75-81-83.
Grahn’s shot on #11 rolled over the cup; just missing a Harley, but it was enough for him to add another shirt to his memorabilia closet. His teammate Randy Rider was declared Rookie of the Year while shooting an 81 and obliterating the Long Drive record with a 302 yard blast. Low Gross honors of 74 were shared by Mark DelSantro (also of Team Grahn) and Scott Nangle. Nangle broke his own long drive record on #2, and also carded his 4th sub-80 round in Big Stogie play.
The 8:00 a.m. Bloody Mary’s were the poison, not the fuel, for last year’s champs, as they started with a bogie on #1, and a triple on #4 to finish 3 strokes out in 3rd place. To add insult to injury, Charlie Gallagher went from champ to chump as he doinked the shortest drive on #9. We’ll be keeping a watch on Rookie Team McEvoy and Sophomore Team Lexer; each may be one player away from a future victory. Although they tied for 4th place, both of those teams came within 4 strokes of the winners, with all players shooting 90 or below. Birdie payout was $32, to 14 of our 45 players. And lastly, Paris Hilton was impressed by many of the balls that she saw on the 1st hole; although it was John Coary who came closest to the celebrity.
We would also like to thank this year's sponsors and business partners:
